SOUTH KOREA AND THE PHILIPPINES COULD BE ENTERING A NEW ERA OF DEFENSE COOPERATION! 🇵🇭🇰🇷 For years, South Korea has been one of the Philippines' most important defense suppliers. But recent developments suggest that Manila and Seoul are looking beyond traditional arms purchases. During the 2026 Seoul Defense Dialogue, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back discussed expanding defense-industry cooperation, military exchanges, modernization and maritime security. More importantly, Teodoro has emphasized moving the relationship beyond simple procurement toward co-production and joint shipbuilding capabilities in the Philippines. A logistics supply ship has reportedly been among the projects being considered for this type of cooperation. Meanwhile, South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries continues to play a major role in Philippine Navy modernization. The Philippine Navy's six-ship Rajah Sulayman-class Offshore Patrol Vessel program includes the BRP Rajah Sulayman, BRP Rajah Lakandula, BRP Rajah Humabon, BRP Sultan Kudarat, BRP Datu Marikudo and BRP Datu Sikatuna. A new Philippine Navy warship is also expected to be launched by HD Hyundai in October 2026, according to recent reporting citing Secretary Teodoro. The exact vessel has not yet been officially confirmed, although one of the remaining Rajah Sulayman-class OPVs is a strong possibility.
