Pascal BOYER, chercheur en résidence 2021-2022 à l’IEA de Paris

Projet de recherche : Dynamiques cognitives et diversité des religions : concepts, communication et dévouement Pascal Boyer a étudié la philosophie et l'anthropologie à l'Université de Paris et à Cambridge, où il a effectué ses travaux de doctorat avec le professeur Jack Goody, sur les contraintes mémorielles posées par la transmission de la littérature orale. Il a effectué des recherches anthropologiques de terrain au Cameroun sur la transmission des épopées orales fang et sur la religion traditionnelle fang. Depuis, il a surtout travaillé sur l'étude expérimentale des capacités cognitives qui sous-tendent la transmission culturelle. L'objectif est de rassembler des preuves comportementales, développementales et neuro-cognitives de capacités spécifiques à un domaine dans l'esprit humain. Une application anthropologique de ces résultats a été une série d'études sur les concepts religieux et leur mémorisation, ainsi qu'une description plus générale des processus cognitifs impliqués dans la transmission des concepts religieux. Après avoir enseigné à Cambridge, San Diego, Lyon et Santa Barbara, Pascal Boyer a rejoint son poste actuel dans les départements d'anthropologie et de psychologie de l'université de Washington, à Saint-Louis. Il est l'auteur, entre autres, de Religion Explained (Basic Books, 2001) et Minds make societies (Yale UP, 2018). ____________________________________________ Research project: Cognitive Dynamics and the Diversity of Religions: Concepts, Communication and Commitment Pascal Boyer studied philosophy and anthropology at University of Paris and Cambridge, where he did his graduate work with Professor Jack Goody, on the memory constraints on transmission of oral literature. He has done anthropological fieldwork in Cameroon on the transmission of the Fang oral epics and on Fang traditional religion. Since then, he has worked mostly on the experimental study of cognitive capacities underling cultural transmission. The aim is to gather behavioral, developmental and neuro-cognitive evidence for domain-specific capacities in human minds. An anthropological application of these results was a series of studies on religious concepts and their retention in memory, as well as a more general description of the cognitive processes involved in transmission of religious concepts. After teaching in Cambridge, San Diego, Lyon and Santa Barbara, Pascal Boyer moved to his present position at the departments of anthropology and psychology at Washington University, St. Louis. He is the author of, among other publications, Religion Explained (Basic Books, 2001) and Minds make societies (Yale UP, 2018).
