Duo Vaschenko Contortion — Adagio Act | Circus Prometheus, Buenos Aires (1981–82)

This rare footage captures Duo Vaschenko performing their celebrated adagio act in Buenos Aires, almost certainly during the landmark South American tour of the Circus Prometheus ensemble in 1981-1982. Under the direction of Vladimir V. Volzhansky, Prometheus was among the most prestigious circus productions of the Soviet era, and this tour was, by all accounts, a triumph: audiences lined up for tickets, torches were lit in the streets to greet the company, and the performers were met with a reception few circus shows in the world have ever matched. Iryna Vaschenko, inventor of the legendary "Iryna Backfold" and one of the most celebrated contortionists of the 20th century, appears here alongside her husband Vladislav, a producer and performer in his own right. Their duo act, choreographed with the help of ballet-master Viktor Kravchenko and his wife Irina, was built on a deliberate artistic challenge: to create a pair act that drew on Iryna's extraordinary back flexibility without simply repeating her solo contortion work. The result was something rarer: a performance that fused dramatic storytelling, classical aesthetics, and world-class physical artistry into a single act. What you are seeing in this footage is that act, performed at full intensity, in front of an Argentine audience that had come to witness something extraordinary. By this point, Duo Vaschenko had only recently joined the Prometheus company, and every night was, as Iryna later recalled, "like a premiere." Iryna Vaschenko went on to a career spanning more than 40 years on stage and in the training studio. She remains active today as a trainer specializing in contortion and pair acrobatics.
