Martha Jane Hensley was born in 1857, in a time when feeding a large family meant producing almost everything at home.
In this story, she remembers life in the hills of West Virginia around the turn of the century: cooking over a wood stove, carrying water, preserving food without refrigeration, raising children, stretching meals, and finding ways to make almost nothing go to waste.
Daily life depended heavily on what a family could grow, raise, preserve, repair, and reuse. Chickens, hogs, gardens, wells, root cellars, wood stoves, and long hours of household work were simply part of survival for many rural families.
What makes these memories so striking is how ordinary they were at the time. Things that seem almost impossible today were once part of everyday family life.
