Steel Ball Run Episode 3 is out, and it turned one of the most skippable fights in Part 7 into the best-looking thing David Production has animated all season. Full breakdown of every anime vs manga difference in Steel Ball Run Episode 3 — what got changed, what got cut, and the one thing nobody else is talking about: where Mountain Tim's name, his Stand and his horse actually come from. The Boom Boom family finally shows up, and their names are a nod to Andre 3000's real name, Andre Lauren Benjamin. Their horses are a Jimi Hendrix deep cut — one song from each of his three studio albums. Andre rides Foxy Lady, L.A. rides Little Wing, Benjamin rides Crosstown Traffic. And Andre 3000 would go on to play Hendrix in a biopic, which is the kind of coincidence Araki doesn't deserve. Then there's Mountain Tim. Oh! Lonesome Me is a Don Gibson song from 1958. His horse, Ghost Riders in the Sky, is a Stan Jones song from 1948. Johnny Cash covered both of them, which makes Cash the single artist connecting the Stand and the horse. And the Stand's name fits Tim's whole arc so precisely that his official spin-off novel is literally titled Lonesome Tim. Also covered: the somber tone shift in the cold open, Marco's missing background, the cork joke surviving intact, Diego's cover-model pose, the spotted salamander emoji getting cut, Johnny's alternate color scheme, the eyecatch landing on the manga's chapter break, the creepypasta Stand reveal, that debris transition, and the hoof print change at the end of chapter 17. Plus: what I do when the ED hits. Spoiler, it isn't good.
