Fall asleep to the complete story of the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the fifty-three-day siege that ended the Byzantine Empire. This calm history-for-sleep documentary follows Emperor Constantine XI, Sultan Mehmed II, and the final struggle for the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
The story begins in 1449, when Constantine XI inherited a city surrounded by Ottoman power. Across the water, the young Mehmed II took the throne and began closing every route by which Constantinople might be rescued. A new fortress controlled the Bosporus. Orban’s great cannon were cast at Edirne. Inside the city, union with the Roman Church became the price of western assistance, while Giovanni Giustiniani and a small force of foreign soldiers joined a defense that could never be large enough.
For fifty-three days, Ottoman cannon struck the ancient land walls while the defenders rebuilt them at night. Four supply ships fought their way through an Ottoman fleet. Mehmed answered by hauling ships over the hills and into the Golden Horn. Mines, siege towers, hunger, failed diplomacy, and the absence of a relief fleet gradually narrowed the defenders’ choices until the final assault began before dawn on May 29.
Giustiniani was wounded. Constantine remained near the broken defenses and died as the city fell. Mehmed entered Constantinople at twenty-one years old. The Eastern Roman Empire was gone, but the city survived and became the center of another empire.
Settle in for a slow, immersive journey through Byzantine history, Ottoman history, medieval siege warfare, and the final days of Constantinople, told for sleep, relaxation, and quiet late-night listening.
