Indian DNA carries one of the most complex population histories in the world.
When scientists compared genetic data from Indian communities with populations across Eurasia, they discovered that there is no single “Indian DNA.” Instead, different groups preserve varying combinations of ancestry created by thousands of years of migration, isolation, admixture, and founder events.
Earlier genome-wide research identified ancestry historically described as Ancestral North Indian, which shows genetic affinities with Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and European populations, alongside Ancestral South Indian-related ancestry, which is much more distinctive to the Indian subcontinent.
Newer research has refined that story further, showing major ancestry contributions related to ancient South Asian hunter-gatherers, Iranian/Central Asian Neolithic-related populations, and later Steppe pastoralists.
In this documentary, we trace Indian DNA across South Asia and Eurasia, exploring the ancient migrations that created modern Indian diversity and why different Indian populations can show very different genetic relationships.
The real surprise is not one perfect global match—it is how many ancient population histories still survive inside India today.
