About TestDisk
TestDisk is a free partition recovery and disk repair utility available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its main purpose is to find lost partitions, repair damaged boot sectors, restore partition tables, and regain access to RAW or inaccessible drives. TestDisk can also copy files from damaged partitions and create disk images before repairs are made.
Pros
✅ Completely free and open-source
✅ Excellent lost-partition recovery
✅ Can repair partition tables and boot sectors
✅ Works with RAW and inaccessible drives
✅ Supports Windows, macOS, and Linux
✅ Can create disk images
Cons
❌ Dated text-based interface
❌ No file previews or filters
❌ Easy to choose the wrong repair option
❌ Undelete works only in limited cases
❌ Cannot recover files after formatting
❌ Not designed as a general-purpose recovery app
Verdict
So, is TestDisk legit? Absolutely. TestDisk is one of the strongest free tools for lost partitions, RAW volumes, damaged boot sectors, and partition-table repair. However, I wouldn’t recommend it as a general file recovery solution. The workflow is difficult to follow, its Undelete feature is limited, and an incorrect write operation can make the problem worse.
For deleted or formatted files, PhotoRec is the more suitable free option. For a cleaner interface, previews, filters, preserved file names and folders when metadata survives, and stronger fragmented-video recovery, Disk Drill is easier to use.
