CAPITAL OF LAGUNA BIKE TOUR | STA. CRUZ LAGUNA Santa Cruz is a first class municipality and the capital of the province of Laguna. In the last decade of the 16th century, Santa Cruz was once the great village of the present municipality of Lumban, as well as other contemporary towns such as Pagsanjan, Cavinti, Paete and Pangil. On 4 June 1602, Santa Cruz separated from Lumban and became a pueblo with the church and local government. Since its founding in 1602, the town has been destroyed by dangerous forces such as fire, typhoon, flood and genocide during the Philippine Revolution of 1896–1899, the Philippine War of Independence (1899–1902), Battle of Santa Cruz , the attack of the Tulisanes (bandits) during Spain. Filipino troops of the pre-war 4th and 42nd Infantry Division of the Philippine Commonwealth Army and recognized guerrillas also came from the town and were involved in the Second Battle of Santa Cruz on 26 January 1945. Characterized by the fertile flat lands located on the coast of Laguna de Bay, the economic base of the town has traditionally been anchored in two major industries, namely agriculture and fishing which still remain to this day. Due to Santa Cruz’s strategic location in relation to other coastal communities about the lake, trading activities also began in the town in the early days of the settlement. The town has smoothly always been the focus of activities that are available to access other coastal areas due to the crossing Santa Cruz River besides Laguna de Bay itself. Since those early days, water has been the main mode of transportation.
