Eddystone Lighthouse: how to build a tower on a sea rock? | Historical reconstruction in Minecraft

Historical reconstruction. How do you build a tower on a small rock in the open sea, where storms smash everything? About 13 miles south-west of Plymouth, England, waves break right over the Eddystone rocks. We rebuilt the reef, its lighthouses, the workyard at Plymouth and a studio of models in Minecraft to tell the true story: Henry Winstanley's tower (lit in 1698) and the Great Storm of 1703, John Rudyerd's smooth wooden cone and the fire of 1755, and John Smeaton's stone tower: shaped like an oak tree, built from stones that lock together like a jigsaw, set with a lime mortar that hardens under water, and lit with 24 candles on 16 October 1759. It stood for about 120 years, until the rock beneath it began to crack. Its top now stands on Plymouth Hoe. 0:00 A Tower in the Waves 0:44 A Deadly Reef 1:28 The Showman's Tower 2:20 The Great Storm 3:02 A Smooth Wooden Cone 3:43 Fire at the Top 4:29 The Instrument Maker 5:44 Stones Like a Puzzle 6:50 A Mortar for the Sea 7:33 Working Between Tides 8:45 Twenty-Four Candles 9:29 A Hundred and Twenty Years 10:23 Built Like an Oak The models are not to scale and are simplified (the towers, rocks, ships, the dovetail diagrams and the cut-open towers are drawings in blocks, not exact plans). Villagers stand in for the builders, the keepers and the people of Plymouth. The storm and the fire are shown without people. Series: Science Behind the Impossible. Each episode asks one question about a job that looked impossible and answers it with a Minecraft rebuild. This episode follows the Panama Canal episode. Planned next: how do you dig a tunnel under a river? (the Thames Tunnel in London). The facts come from John Smeaton's own book about the lighthouse (1791), Trinity House, the Royal Society, the Institution of Civil Engineers, Royal Museums Greenwich, Historic England, The Box Plymouth, English Heritage, the British Museum and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Where sources disagree, we use rounded numbers. All footage is Minecraft Java Edition. The narration voice is AI-generated. The music and sound effects are original. Subtitles: English, 日本語, Español, Português, Deutsch, Français, 한국어, Bahasa Indonesia.
