Kanjinchō (The Subscription List) stands as one of the most revered and popular plays in the Kabuki canon. Belonging to the prestigious Kabuki Jūhachiban (The Eighteen Great Plays), it tells a heart-wrenching story of loyalty and the heavy burden of duty.
The story is set at the Ataka Barrier, where Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a legendary hero of the Minamoto clan, is fleeing from his brother, Shogun Yoritomo. Yoshitsune and his small band of followers are disguised as mountain ascetics (Yamabushi). To pass through the gate guarded by the vigilant Togashi Saemon, Yoshitsune’s loyal retainer Benkei must perform an incredible feat of deception.
When Togashi demands to see their "Kanjinchō" (a scroll listing donors for a temple), Benkei—who possesses only a blank scroll—must "read" it aloud with such conviction and authority that the guards are fooled. The play reaches its emotional peak when Benkei is forced to beat his own master to maintain the disguise, a moment where his heart breaks even as his resolve remains unshaken.
Key Highlights:
The Yamabushi Mondo: The intense intellectual confrontation between Benkei and Togashi. Tobiroppō: The spectacular, high-energy exit of Benkei along the Hanamichi path
