The Shambuka episode has been called the most damning passage in Hindu literature — used for over 150 years to argue that the Ramayana endorses the killing of a man for practising austerities. But the scholars who built that argument had a problem they never disclosed: the episode does not appear in Valmiki's original six-book composition. In this episode: • What the Shambuka episode claims — and which book it actually appears in • Why J.L. Brockington (Oxford University Press, 1984) and the Princeton critical editors classify the Uttara Kanda as compositionally distinct from the original poem • What five major regional Ramayana traditions across a thousand years do with this episode — or don't • What the core six books of Valmiki actually say about Rama's ideal kingship ───────────────────────────── The corrected record is this. The Shambuka episode appears in the Uttara Kanda — Book 7. Textual scholars working from the manuscripts — at Oxford in 1900, at Oxford in 1984, at Princeton in 2017 — classify Book 7 as a compositionally distinct later layer, not part of Valmiki's original six-book composition. The episode is absent from the five major regional Ramayana traditions that have carried this story across a millennium and a continent. The original Valmiki Ramayana — across six books — presents a vision of Rama Rajya defined by the welfare of all people. That is the primary source. That is the text. The critique that rested on the Shambuka episode rested on a passage whose textual status was the first question that needed to be answered — and was not. Now you have the answer. The record is richer than you were told. ───────────────────────────── THE RECORD CORRECTED | A series by the Sanatan Dharma Civilisational Enterprise (SDCE) We go back to the primary source.
