Danny Seraphine built Chicago from nothing — then the band he created voted him out after 23 years. This is that story. Danny Seraphine founded Chicago in 1967 and built the drum sound behind "25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "Beginnings," "Make Me Smile," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry." His jazz-fusion drumming powered Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago II, Chicago V, and the platinum run that defined the band's golden era. He stood beside Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Peter Cetera, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane, and Walter Parazaider — and held Chicago together through Kath's death in 1978 and the Peter Cetera ballad era that saved them from irrelevance. Then in 1990, after saving Chicago three separate times, the remaining members made a decision that ended everything. No press conference. No farewell tour. Just a vote — and a locked door. What happened in that meeting, why the band turned on its own founder, and how Danny rebuilt his career with California Transit Authority is a story Chicago has never fully told.
