Why is it dark at night? Curie watches the sun go down, then flies up into space to find out if the sun goes to sleep.
In this episode, children aged 5 to 6 look at the Earth from above. The sun keeps shining all the time, but it can only light the side of the Earth that faces it. That side has day, and the far side is dark, so it has night. The Earth is always spinning, slowly, so Curie's house turns into the dark and back into the sunshine again: one whole spin takes one day and one night. When it is day for us, it is night for children on the other side of the world! And the sun only seems to come up and go down, because we are the ones turning.
Say it with me: the Earth spins!
Try it at home (with a grown-up): make the room dark, shine a torch on a ball with a sticker on it from a few steps away, and turn the ball slowly. When is the sticker in the light? When is it in the dark? Never shine a torch into anyone's eyes.
