Unfortunately, the walkthrough that I was using on Gamefaqs not only skipped side quests & extra content, but it did not prepare me for the challenges at the end of this game. At this point, it is clear that upgrades in equipment are going to be needed going forward and that is going to require a lot of time and effort to get caught up in item creation. For now, this playthrough is on pause until I can create said equipment.
