Born owned near Brenham — eighteen when the rope was passed in secret, twenty-eight when freedom was read at Galveston. Eighteen in America · Volume 9 — The House Divided (1856–1866) A WORD BEFORE THE MUSIC For Robert James — the ninth voice in the chain, and the one the whole chain was climbing toward. Samuel, born owned on a place near Brenham, a secret reader of the Book: eighteen when Franz pressed the rope into his hands behind the barn's north wall, twenty-eight when he came home to Texas wearing Union blue, the same June week that freedom was read out loud at Galveston. He sang the war that settled whether the promise of 1776 meant everybody — and he sang it having paid for the answer. The good and the bad come braided like a rope. That rope is what you climb. Every song on this record tells the truth about one year — the good and the bad together, because that is how the years actually arrive. Nothing here is sugared, and nothing here is hopeless.
