With Skalitz destroyed and its people struggling to survive in Rattay, Henry is asked to help find work for the refugees. But with too many people desperate for money and only a handful of jobs available, choosing who gets a chance proves difficult. Henry speaks with the refugees, hearing stories of lost homes, wounded family members, ruined livelihoods, and hopes of returning to the mines. He also searches for a cook and discovers Agnes, a respected cook from Skalitz, who agrees to work for the merchant Hogan.
