Velanie Baretto and Joan Rodri from Holy Cross Parish, Kurla, Mumbai, share their beautiful journey of faith and devotion to Our Lady of Good Health at Velankanni. For Velanie, her family has been coming to Velankanni for nearly 10–13 years. For Joan, this is her third visit. They describe Velankanni not simply as a church, but as a mother’s home—a place where they can bring their burdens, tears, joys, hopes and prayers and experience the loving presence of Mother Mary. They speak about the powerful emotions they experience during the flag hoisting, Pali procession, Novena and the celebration of Mother Mary's birthday. Even getting leave from work to make the annual pilgrimage feels like a blessing and a sign that Mother Mary continues to call them back to her. As members of the East Indian community of Mumbai, they share how Velankanni has become like their spiritual home and even their native village. Their community celebrates an East Indian Mass in their traditional dialect, along with cultural programs, choir and Pali traditions. They lovingly call Mother Mary “Maui” — Mother, expressing the deep motherly affection and protection they experience through her. They also reflect on Jesus’ words from the Cross: “Behold, your mother.” They believe that Mary is a mother to all of us, interceding for her children and leading us closer to Jesus. Their testimony is a beautiful reminder that people from different communities, regions and even different faiths come to Velankanni united by faith, hope and their love for Our Lady of Good Health. “We don't want to visit anywhere else. We want to come to Velankanni every year.” Our Lady of Good Health, Velankanni, pray for us.
