New Order - Shellshock (Extended 12" Version - Short Edit)

An edit of Shellshock by New Order. The second of New Order's three contentious John Robie collaborations (Sub-culture and Shame of the Nation are the others). Contentious because NO fans are still arguing about their quality. I personally see Robie's Sub-culture remix as a bit of misfire rescued by the Benelux 5 minute edit that trims away some of the excess. I also really like his mix/recording of Shame of the Nation although it too gets a bit silly. I really like Shellshock, particularly the intro and the breakdown from the 12" version. I wish NO and Robie hadn't gotten so tapeloop happy on the Shellcock dub, because the cut up vocals mar an instrumental track that really swings like few NO tracks do. Shellshock is probably NO and Robie's best collaboration but it too doesn't appear to have a definitive mix. The 7" edit (4m 25s) is tight and very exciting and includes a rare hooky bass solo but obviously cuts out a lot of the song's thrilling moments. The Pretty In Pink edit (6m 7s) includes some parts cut from the Substance edit but just fades out unsatisfactorily. The Substance 1987 compilation edit (6m 28s) is arguably the best edit, it's the most well known, but it unfortunately hammers the listener with the verses and choruses without much let up for instrumental passages. Until I heard the full 12" I always wondered why a six and a half minute song had a 2 minute intro-build. Finally the full length 12" (9m 45s) is simply too long! The sheer number of repetitions of the chorus at the end is insane. But it's the only version that includes a mid-song breakdown and an instrumental passage, plus it has the bass solo from the 7" that's missing from the 6 minute versions. After that overly long explanation, the reason I put together this edit was to try and find a good middle-ground between the Substance and 12" edits. I included the instrumental passage and solo, but left out the awkward half-verse that appears on the Pretty In Pink and 12" versions. I did a version that included it that runs 8m 53s, (see below) but I felt if I was going to make cuts I should make some hard cuts. I also remade the Substance 1987 edits of the final chorus. I'm unsure if anyone will actually like this edit, but I had fun making it.
