Today is a realistic day in China: cooking, eating, and resetting my tiny rental. I make black grass jelly—leung fun—with honey. It’s a traditional Cantonese dessert made from Mesona, a cousin of mint, not real grass. Then I make braised pork trotters that are rich, sticky, and fall-off-the-bone tender, plus a quick salted cucumber with chili sauce.
Later, I head out for Huizhou street food: sugarcane slush, A Ma Jiao—a crispy radish-stuffed fritter—and pickled fruit. Finally, I reset my small rental apartment by moving the extra wardrobe and desk to create a more open layout. No perfect staging, just a cozy, honest day in China.
