From Market and Farm to Table Preparing Our Traditional African Village Supper ❤️

It’s 3:00 PM in our village and preparations for tonight’s supper are beginning. ❤️🌿 Our afternoon starts at the local market, where Mama Jane buys fish, fresh tomatoes, green peppers and a few other ingredients for the family’s supper. With everything she needs from the market, she takes a boda boda back home. But not everything for tonight’s meal comes from the market. Back home, Mama Jane walks into the banana plantation to harvest fresh matooke. She cuts down a bunch and carries it home on her head, ready to begin preparing our traditional supper. While Mama Jane peels the matooke, Andrew, Moses, Ismail and Jack walk to the borehole to fetch water for the family. Mama Jane then prepares the banana stems and leaves inside the cooking pot before wrapping the matooke in banana leaves and setting it over the fire to cook. While we wait for the matooke, we have a little treat. ❤️ Our friend Liz gave us a jackfruit, so Mama Jane cuts it open and we enjoy some together. Once the matooke is soft, Mama Jane carefully mashes it while it is still wrapped inside the banana leaves — the traditional way we prepare it. She then finishes the fish sauce, and as the sun begins to set over our village, supper is finally ready. 🌅 The family gathers together to enjoy the matooke and fish after a long afternoon of preparing everything from market and garden to table. ❤️ Thank you for spending another day with our family.
