#1984 #riots #india #sikh #indiragandhi The anti-Sikh riots in Delhi following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a dark moment in India’s history. An organised pogrom with political connivance saw murderous gangs target innocent Sikh families, murdering the men in front of their wives who were themselves gang raped and tortured. Their untold stories have been documented by Sanam Sutirath Wazir in the book Kaurs of 1984, a year that was a watershed one. Elsewhere in Punjab, as terrorism spiked women took up arms, or defiantly stood behind their men who were involved in the daily cycle of violence. This is also their story.
