In 1667 the Dutch left England in charge of Manhattan and kept a three-kilometre nutmeg island in Indonesia. Why did a company with its own army, warships and stock market care so much about one island? Inside the Dutch East India Company (VOC): the first big public share offering, the spice map of Banda, Batavia, Dutch forts in India, Dejima in Japan, and the collapse of 1799. The thesis: the VOC was a company that behaved like a state, and every war had to pay a dividend. We test it three ways: was it a state, did the money work, and who paid? Along the way: the 1602 share sale, the first bear raid, Coen and Banda in 1621, Amboyna, Cochin and Colachel, Ceylon, Dejima, and the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Chapters: 0:00 1. The swap 2:26 2.
