Multiply three twos together and you get eight. So what do you get if you multiply two half a time? It sounds off from the start — what would half a time even mean? But there is an answer. School taught us that an exponent tells you how many times you multiply. Convenient, but that explanation only holds when the exponent is a counting number. What is left when you multiply zero times? What about negative three times? What about half a time? This episode carries exactly one rule: multiply powers with the same base and the exponents add. Keep that one rule intact, and for the zero power, the negatives and the fractions there is *exactly one value that fits.* We did not choose it. It was what was left. 📍 Chapters 0:00 Half a time 0:17 We learned it as how many times 0:49 One rule 1:23 If we keep the rule 2:04 The answer to half a time 2:45 One third, two thirds 3:22 Nobody decided it 4:06 Counting it backwards 📌 In this episode · "How many times you multiply" only works when the exponent is a counting number · One rule — multiply powers with the same base and the exponents add · Why two to the zero is one: keep the rule and no other value fits · A negative exponent means flip it over to the reciprocal (two to the negative third = one eighth) · Why two to the one half is the square root of two — and how the rule itself closes the negative branch · The denominator says how many times you multiply to come back; the numerator is the power · Two routes, one destination: (eight to the one third) squared = (eight squared) to the one third · Today only a positive base — with a negative base, fractional exponents are a different story · Fractional exponents were never something to memorize; they come out of the rule 🔗 Earlier EP.01 One map from counting numbers to complex numbers EP.02 Imaginary numbers are a direction, not imagination EP.03 Walk π around a circle and you are halfway EP.04 A 100% grade is 45 degrees EP.05 Similarity — erase the size, keep the shape EP.06 A function is not a formula — Mathiter is a math practice app for international school and study-abroad students.
