Drive across the boneyard! Kemble Cotswold Airport, UK | B747, B727, A318 & more!

Cotswold Airport, formerly known as RAF Kemble, is located in the Gloucestershire countryside of southwest England, just outside the village of Kemble and a short drive from the town of Cirencester. The airfield was built before World War II and officially became a Royal Air Force station in 1938. During its military years, it served as a maintenance and support base for a variety of aircraft. It is also well known as the former home of the Royal Air Force's aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, which operated from Kemble until the early 1980s. Today, Cotswold Airport is a busy civilian airport that supports general aviation, aircraft maintenance, pilot training, business aviation, and aviation-related companies. Its long runway is capable of handling everything from small private aircraft to large commercial jets. The airport is also a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts, who visit to watch aircraft movements and see the many classic and modern aircraft based and stored there. One of the airport's most recognizable features is its large aircraft storage area, often called the "Kemble boneyard." Airlines from around the world send aircraft to Kemble when they are retired, temporarily parked, or awaiting a new operator. Many of these airplanes are carefully preserved while others are dismantled, with valuable parts removed for reuse and the remaining materials recycled. During the Kemble Cotswold Airport Open Weekend 2026 we were able to take a tour across this European boneyard, which is relatively small compared to the American counterparts like Victorville and Mojave. Still, Kemble has some very nice stored residents! Notable aircraft here are the Boeing 727s, the Boeing 747s and the various Airbus A320-family noses.
