Can the Laws of Nature Die? What If the Rules of Reality Can Change?

We assume that the laws of nature are eternal. Gravity works today as it did billions of years ago, and the universe seems to follow the same fundamental rules everywhere. But what exactly is a law of nature? Does it exist independently of the universe, or is it simply our description of patterns in reality? Were the laws of physics already “there” before the universe took its present form? And if the universe were to disappear, would its laws still exist?
