Historical Note: The SU-100 was designed in 1943 as a replacement for the older SU-85, which was gradually falling out of favor and proving inadequate against newer German heavy tanks. It was based on the T-34-85 chassis and powered by a 500-horsepower diesel engine, making it a highly mobile platform. Its frontal casemate armor was increased to 75 mm, compared to the T-34's standard 45 mm frontal hull armor. Equipped with the new 100 mm D-10S cannon, it was capable of penetrating up to 125 mm of vertical steel armor at a distance of 2 km under real combat conditions, allowing it to engage and destroy German armored vehicles from a relatively safe distance. Between September 1944 and May 1945, approximately 2,335 SU-100s were rapidly produced at Uralmash and deployed in major operations such as the Budapest Offensive, the Balaton Defensive Operation, and the Battle of Berlin. Fun Fact: At one point, the factory ran short of D-10S cannons for the SU-100 while still having a large number of completed hulls ready for assembly. Meanwhile, 85 mm guns remained readily available. As a temporary solution, the SU-85M was introduced to keep the production lines running and maintain a steady flow of reinforcements until additional D-10S cannons became available.
