Jorge Gutierrez, the creator of El Tigre, The Book of Life, and Maya and the Three, just became the center of one of the biggest animation controversies of the year after Amazon announced his generative AI animated series, Punky Duck.
In this video, I break down what happened with Jorge Gutierrez and the animation community, why the Punky Duck AI controversy became such a huge cautionary tale, and why I actually think this whole situation could end up being a win for animation and a massive loss for AI companies trying to take over the industry.
Generative AI in animation has become one of the biggest issues in Hollywood right now, especially as artists, animators, writers, and creators continue to push back against AI tools that steal from real artists and threaten actual creative jobs. Jorge had spent years building trust in the animation community, speaking out against AI, supporting indie artists, and criticizing Hollywood’s worst decisions, which made this whole situation even more confusing and disappointing.
But after the backlash, Jorge scrapped the AI series and apologized, and I think that matters. Because now AI companies have a real example of what happens when they try to use respected artists and creators to make their tech look acceptable.
So let’s talk about why the animation industry is broken, why AI companies are desperate for big names, and why this whole controversy might make celebrities and creators way more afraid to touch generative AI going forward.
