Henry Ford did not paint the Model T black because he liked black. He painted it black because carbon black pigment cured faster than any other color, and cure time was the one thing standing between him and a moving assembly line. That single bottleneck kicked off forty years of chemistry that built the coatings industry we still work in today — nitrocellulose lacquer, alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and a war that accidentally invented latex paint.
This is Episode 4 of the Coatings Industry Training Series, based on Book One: Paint Formulation for Beginners: No Chemistry Degree Required.
0:00 – Why Ford painted the Model T black
— Nitrocellulose lacquer solves the speed problem
— Alkyd resin: the first engineered binder, and oil length
— Titanium dioxide: the white pigment problem, solved for good
— WWII: an accidental gift to the paint industry
WHO THIS IS FOR
Brand-new lab techs, chemists switching into coatings from another field, and anyone who's ever wondered why alkyd oil length or TiO2 refractive index shows up in conversation like it's common knowledge.
WHAT'S NEXT
Episode 5 covers the twenty-five most productive years in coatings history — 1945 to 1970 — when latex, epoxy, polyurethane, and powder coatings all either got invented or grew up. If you work in this industry, there's a real chance everything you touch on a daily basis came out of that window.
📘 This series is based on Book One of the Coatings Industry Training Series, available on Amazon KDP. Book Two goes deep on raw materials themselves.
