San Francisco, November 28, 1976. Elvis Presley is on stage at the Cow Palace, and in the front row sits Linda Thompson, the Memphis beauty queen who has lived with him for four and a half years. Partway through the show she asks him for a scarf and hands it to a stranger. Before she leaves the city, he will look her in the eye and tell her there is no other girl.
This is Linda Thompson as the record has her. A Southern Baptist girl who told her parents at 6 that she would marry Elvis Presley, Miss Tennessee Universe in 1972, and a midnight movie at the Memphian Theater the summer his marriage to Priscilla ended. Las Vegas, the Honolulu satellite concert, the hospital bed beside his at Baptist Memorial, the other women, the bullet through the dressing room door, and the breakup song he recorded without taking the hint.
Then what she was really doing for him at night, and why she decided she could not do it forever. The goodbye in San Francisco, the letter she wrote him that Christmas, the phone call from 9-year-old Lisa Marie in August 1977, and the life she built afterwards, writing the words to songs for Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. And the question his father put to her, which she still says nobody can answer.
If you want the record behind more of the legends you grew up with, subscribe. If this one changed how you see her, leave a like. And tell me in the comments, where are you watching from?
