Powerful commanding male vocals, massive mixed choir, thunderous medieval war drums, Celtic harp, low whistle, dark horns, cinematic strings and deep subterranean ambience create a sound of prophecy, ancient conflict and defiance. The anthem begins beneath stone and hidden water before rising into a huge heroic chorus as the Red Dragon confronts its ancient rival.
The Legend Behind the Red Dragon:
The Red Dragon, known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch, is deeply rooted in the legendary history of Britain and Wales.
One of its most famous stories begins with Vortigern, a ruler attempting to build a fortress on a hill. Each day his builders raised the walls, but every night the structure mysteriously collapsed. Unable to understand why, Vortigern sought advice from his wise men.
They claimed that the foundations could only be strengthened through the sacrifice of a boy born without a human father.
A young boy was eventually brought before the king, but instead of accepting his fate, he challenged the advisers and revealed that they did not understand what truly lay beneath the hill.
He ordered the ground to be opened.
Hidden beneath the fortress was a great pool, and beneath its waters rested two dragons — one red and one white.
When the dragons were released, they immediately began a violent battle. At first the White Dragon appeared to overpower the Red Dragon, forcing it back again and again. But the Red Dragon recovered, fought with renewed strength and finally drove its rival away.
The boy then explained the meaning of the vision.
The Red Dragon represented the native Britons, while the White Dragon represented the invading Saxons. The struggle between the creatures foretold a long age of conflict in which the Britons would suffer defeat and lose territory, yet would not disappear. The Red Dragon's eventual resurgence symbolized survival, resistance and the hope that the people of the land would one day rise again.
In the early medieval Historia Brittonum, the prophetic boy is identified as Ambrosius. In later Arthurian tradition, especially through Geoffrey of Monmouth, the story became associated with the young Merlin, transforming the scene into one of the most famous prophecies connected with Britain's legendary past.
The hill itself became associated with Dinas Emrys in Wales, a place later tradition remembered as the hidden resting place of the dragons.
Over the centuries, Y Ddraig Goch grew far beyond this single legend. The Red Dragon became an enduring symbol of Wales, carrying ideas of ancient identity, endurance and a people surviving through centuries of changing rulers and kingdoms.
“Dragon of the Ancient Land” captures that moment beneath Vortigern's fortress — two dragons awakening beneath the earth, prophecy emerging from darkness, and the Red Dragon refusing to remain defeated.
