In late 1963, just before Kenya became independent, British officials sorted the colony’s sensitive records into two piles: destroy, or ship home. The shipped pile disappeared into a high-security compound in England called Hanslope Park. Kenya asked for its own history back in 1967, in 1974 and again in the 1980s, and each request went nowhere.
This video follows the paper trail: Operation Legacy, the elderly Kenyans who sued Britain in 2009, the historian David Anderson who pointed to a secret archive of roughly 1,500 Kenyan files, and the 2011 discovery of more than 8,000 files from 37 former colonies. You’ll see what the courts ruled, why the British government agreed in 2013 to pay £19.9 million to 5,228 Kenyans, and why many say it still wasn’t enough.
If you’re Kenyan, your grandparents lived through the Emergency years, so this is your family’s history too. And if you’ve ever wondered who decides what a country is allowed to remember, this story is for you.
