Rare - Begum Akhtar Sings Dadra ( Mehfil 1964 )

On the Death Anniversary of Begum Akhtar, I feel privileged to share an exceptionally rare recording, unearthed from a private musical gathering dating back to 1964! The Vital Link With Our Musical Past Snapped With The Passing Away Of Begum Akhtar Sahiba On 30 October, 1974. Few Luminaries Have Shone So Brightly On The Musical Horizon As This Inimitable Lady. Fewer Still Are The Virtuousi To Come By With Such Fitness For Aligning Their Music To The Moods And Taste Of Their Motley Audiences. For Nearly Four Decades She Virtually Ruled The Kingdom Of Ghazal Gayaki / Light Classical Music And Established A Style Of Singing Which Many Artistes Of Fame Today Consider A Matter Of Pride To Adopt. In Four Decades, She Strode The Ghazal Canvas Like A Colossus, She Had The World At Her Feet, And Her Peers Either Swept Off Their Feet In Delight Or Relegated To Backbiting About The “Means” Of Her Achievement But Those Were The others; She Was The Legend - In Her Lifetime, And After Her Death. “Her Music Shall Always Remain A Great Heritage Of Our Culture and Tradition !!” #begumakhtar #hindustaniclassicalmusic #indianclassicalmusic
