Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg wrapped her husband's heart in it after Gustavus Adolphus fell at Lützen in 1632, in the Thirty Years' War, and hung it over the bed she shared with her six year old daughter, Queen Christina. The books call her Sweden's mad queen. We follow the widow through nineteen months with an open coffin, the council that took her child, the night she went out a Gripsholm window and sailed to Denmark, and a daughter who never forgave it.
