Have you ever tried using a paint roller for texture painting? I had a hunch this technique had serious potential — and I was really happy with the results!
In this tutorial, I'm building rich, layered texture on canvas starting with joint compound and a paint roller. The compound was thicker than expected straight out of the tub, so I had to pivot — grabbing a scraper to work it into the canvas before getting the roller back in action. Once the base texture was down, I brought in a palette knife and a paint brush to break things up and add even more interest to the surface.
After everything dried, I washed the whole canvas with blues, greens, and yellows — then went back over it with contrasting colors to really bring out all those gorgeous peaks and grooves in the textured painting. The finishing touch? Antique silver leaf for a shimmer and brightness that pulls the whole piece together. Whether you're new to acrylic painting or you're obsessed with texture painting on canvas like I am, this roller technique creates a surface that's almost impossible to replicate with a brush alone. Give it a try — you might just surprise yourself!
