Black smoke, closed roads, evacuations. Meanwhile, under an old salt mine in Goderich, Ontario, a Toronto company has been storing electricity in something much simpler: compressed air. Hydrostor squeezes air into caverns carved in hard rock, keeps the heat, and uses water to push the air back out through a turbine. No lithium. No gas burned. Eight hours or more of power, from a plant built to last over fifty years. Now it wants to build a 500-megawatt, 4-gigawatt-hour plant near Kingston. But one well-known energy analyst says the numbers don't add up.
