11 Florida Towns With the Worst Reputation — Not for the Reasons You'd Guess

Elephants legal in front yards. A mayor who banished Satan by official decree. A town where it snows black every October. These 11 Florida towns have some of the worst reputations in the state — and almost none of them earned it the way you'd think. We're not talking crime stats. We're talking chickens, paper-mill smells, gypsum mountains, sugarcane fires, a poisoned lake that came back to life, a speed trap that nearly got a city dissolved, a slang word, death row, a devil ban, a village of mediums, and the most misunderstood town in Florida. Home prices, health risks, and local conditions change — always verify current information before buying or moving. "Reputation" refers to how these towns are perceived, not a judgment of their residents. Hampton no longer operates the U.S. 301 strip described here. Oviedo's main downtown chicken flock was relocated in 2023–24. Cassadaga and Gibsonton are unincorporated communities. Opinions are our own.
