The Green Hornet radio series was an American adventure drama that premiered January 31, 1936 on Detroit’s WXYZ and ran, with a short 1952 revival, until December 5, 1952. George W. Trendle and Fran Striker—the same team behind The Lone Ranger—built it as a modern-city counterpart to that Western: a masked man who hunts racketeers the law cannot touch. By day, Britt Reid is the young publisher of The Daily Sentinel. By night he becomes the Green Hornet, a wanted “criminal” who uses that reputation to muscle into gangs, expose the bosses, and leave them for the police. His partner is Kato, valet, chauffeur, mechanic, and martial artist. Their car is the armored, gadget-loaded Black Beauty. The Hornet’s signature weapon is a gas gun that knocks opponents out rather than killing them. The opening sting is Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. Early openings claimed he hunted “public enemies that even the G-men cannot reach.” After J. Edgar Hoover objected, it became “public enemies who try to destroy our America.” Stories usually targeted graft, protection rackets, crooked officials, and, during the war years, spies and saboteurs.
