In 2020, a massive wildfire burned through 97% of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park. Six years later, the ancient redwoods are doing something extraordinary. But their survival holds a story that goes far beyond the fire.
The CZU Lightning Complex Fire devastated California's Santa Cruz Mountains, burning more than 86,000 acres, destroying communities, and leaving Big Basin's famous old growth redwood forest almost unrecognizable.
I returned to Big Basin in October of 2026 to investigate what happened, how these ancient trees survived, and what their recovery can teach us about wildfire, forest conservation, and staying alive when a wildfire threatens a hiking trail.
In this short documentary, we'll explore:
The devastating 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire and the people who stayed behind
How California's ancient redwoods were nearly lost more than a century before the wildfire
Indigenous land stewardship and the factors contributing to increasingly destructive wildfires.
The science of redwood survival, including research revealing how burned trees can grow new leaves using carbon stored decades earlier.
What hikers should know about wildfire escape routes, dangerous terrain, and emergency survival.
How Big Basin is recovering, and why protecting this fragile ecosystem still matters.
*A SAD REMINDER FROM SEMPREVIRENS FALLS*
While filming this documentary, I witnessed two visitors crossing clearly marked "Do Not Enter" signs at Sempervirens Falls, entering an area restricted during the forest's recovery.
I shared the encounter on social media, and the response was overwhelming. Most people understood why this was unacceptable, however, some of the comments were astonishing. People argued that they should have the right to explore wherever they want, regardless of closures or environmental damage.
Think about that: This forest survived a devastating wildfire. Its ancient trees are fighting their way back. Scientists, park employees, volunteers, and conservation organizations have spent years working toward its recovery.
Yet a few people believe their desire to explore should come before protecting it. I'm a huge advocate for public lands, outdoor access, and responsible exploration. But access comes with responsibility. Ignoring closures isn't protecting your freedom to explore. It's putting the places we love at risk.
