1100L was filmed in Linz, Austria and documents the chain of events taking place when an object is thrown in the trash. Concept, camera and editing: Reinhard Zach & Hans Raber This project was supported by LinzAG Abfall, most recordings were taken at the RABA facility. The main facility shown here (after 1:00) is run by a staff of ~30 employees and disposes the waste of around one million people, however it does not handle the recycling containers, those go to different sites. The trash arrives via garbage trucks, industrial trucks, and trains. First it is shredded, then various valuables are automatically separated out and sold (different types of plastics, aluminium, ion, and so on). The rest of the rest is stored in a large bunker to be burnt later in a caloric power plant that produces electricity and district heating for the city. What I find fascinating is that this process also makes us at least partially dependent on the trash, we start to rely on it as a source of energy. Gas is sometimes used as a temporary replacement when there isn't enough waste. We got a rather free filming permission and spent many days looking in awe at all the different things passing by, noticing how the smell and colors change over the days. Sometimes everything turns blue for a little while, sometimes it all starts to smell like candy.
