Laozi said: The Great Tao has no form, yet it births and nurtures heaven and earth. The Great Tao has no emotions, yet it moves the sun and moon. The Great Tao has no name, yet it nourishes all things. I do not know its name; thus, I reluctantly named it: Tao. This Tao has clarity and turbidity, motion and tranquility. Heaven is clear, earth is turbid. Heaven is in motion, earth is tranquil. Man is clear, woman is turbid. Man is in motion, woman is tranquil. The descent from the source and flow to the extremities gave rise to all things. Clarity is the source of turbidity. Motion is the foundation of tranquility. When one has constant clarity and tranquility, all of heaven and earth return. The human spirit longs for clarity, but the heart disturbs it. The human heart longs for tranquility, but desires pull at it. Constantly eliminate desires and the heart will naturally be still on its own. Settle the heart and the spirit will naturally be clear on its own. Naturally, the Six Desires will cease to rise, the Three Poisons will perish. Therefore, those who cannot do so fail because their hearts have not yet settled, their desires not yet eliminated. One who has eliminated desires looks inward at the heart, and there is no heart; looks outward at the form, and there is no form; looks afar at things, and there is nothing. Realize these three, and one will only see emptiness. Observe emptiness to empty it. Empty the emptiness into nothingness. This emptiness is now nothingness. Diminish the nothingness. Since this nothingness is now non-existent, there is constant tranquility. When the stillness cannot be more tranquil, how can desires arise? Desires do not arise, and immediately there is true tranquility. Respond to all things with the true constant, realize the true nature with the true constant. One who constantly responds with constant tranquility is one with constant clarity and tranquility. With this clarity and tranquility, one gradually enters the true Tao. Since one has entered the true Tao, one is said to have attained the Tao. Although one is said to have attained the Tao, one has not actually attained anything. In order to teach sentient beings, it is referred to as the attainment of the Tao. Those who can realize this can pass on the sacred Tao. Laozi said: The higher scholars do not contend. The lower scholars seek to contend. The virtuous claim to be non-virtuous. The non-virtuous are attached to virtue. Those with attachments do not understand Tao and virtue. The reason why sentient beings have not attained the Tao is because they have a deluded heart. Since their heart is deluded, their spirit is startled. Since their spirit is startled, they attach to things. Since they attach to things, covetous desire arises. Since covetous desire has risen, there are worries. The worries and delusions distress the body and heart, bringing turbidity and disgrace. Wandering through birth and death, eternally submerged in the sea of suffering, one forever loses the true Tao. The true and constant Tao is self-attained by those who realize it. Those who realize the Tao will have constant clarity and tranquility.
