Sometimes exile wasn't the punishment — it was the trial. In ancient Rome, being cast out could mean anything from a comfortable life in a foreign villa to a slow death on a barren island, and which one you got depended almost entirely on what you'd managed to hold onto.
This is the story of three Romans who lived that gap. Ovid, exiled to a freezing Black Sea outpost, who died still hoping for a recall that never came. Seneca, who turned a rocky exile on Corsica into a base for his philosophy and returned to tutor a future emperor. And Cicero, banished by law but brought home by allies within two years. Same sentence, three completely different outcomes — and a system of resources, connections, and custom that decided which one you got.
