A gearbox that rolls instead of slides. The efficiency of a bearing, with the function of a gearbox — that's the target. This video shows how it works, where a 231-to-1 ratio comes from, what the chevron retainers do, and why it matters for the climate. If adopted globally, the modeled CO2 avoided is about half a gigaton a year. For comparison, LED lighting is about 0.6. The estimate: one prompt, run blind on five AI systems (Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, Perplexity). The only number supplied was our 99% efficiency target; every other input was theirs, from public data. Central estimates 0.37 to 0.64 gigatons a year; average 0.52. Modeled, pending hardware validation. Report: https://roll-labs.com/ For engineers: the device sits in the pin-and-raceway family, in production since the 1920s. The load crosses as a normal force between a pin and a shaped raceway: positive engagement, as with a tooth. It is not a traction drive. The raceway shape is computed so the pin rolls without sliding. Ratios 10:1 to 231:1 are simulated. Ratio = (frSpeed − brSpeed) ÷ (frSpeed − 1); for a one-pin difference that reduces to N_front × N_back ÷ 2 (4 × 5 ÷ 2 = 10; 21 × 22 ÷ 2 = 231). Two US patents granted, one pending. The 3D print shows the motion, not the efficiency. Metal is next. Subscribe for the next ones: the torque de-rippler, and rolling interfaces in three dimensions.
