It started with a towel. By the third time her case was called that morning, the judge had put her under oath and was asking where she was sitting. This is one hearing in the 36th District Court in Detroit, Michigan, stretched across a single morning docket. The court has no dress code written into any statute — what it has is an instruction read out loud before every session, and a judge deciding, face by face, whether he is looking at someone appearing in court or someone answering a video call. She does not accept that there is a difference, and she says so. Ninety minutes later the question is no longer about what she is wearing. It is about a virtual background, a camera that goes off, and what the judge says he saw behind it. Both accounts are in this video: what the judge concluded, and her own explanation of where she was and why. Nothing was proven either way that morning. What was decided is what happens next. CHAPTERS 00:00 Under oath 01:20 It started with a towel 02:40 "What do my clothes got to do with your court?" 04:20 She is not the only one 05:40 "Turn your background off" 06:50 What he says he saw 07:40 "You're coming in person" 08:50 What she lost SOURCE All footage is the official public livestream of the 36th District Court, Detroit, Michigan (Courtroom 535, Judge Sean B. Perkins). Michigan district court proceedings are open to the public and are streamed by the court itself. Educational commentary only — not legal advice. The defendant was not convicted of anything in this hearing and was not charged over the driving question; the matter was reset with an order to appear in person. Nothing here should be read as a finding that any statement made under oath was false. #courtroom #judge #michigan #detroit #zoomcourt #courtcam
