Martial Eagle: 50 Days to Hatch, 100 Days to Fly | Africa’s Ultimate Apex Hunter

Follow the extraordinary life cycle of the Martial Eagle, one of Africa's most powerful aerial predators. The journey begins with an extremely small clutch—usually just 1 egg, and only rarely 2. The egg is incubated for roughly 45–51 days, protected carefully by the parents. After hatching, the helpless chick grows rapidly. During the first 7 weeks, the male does most of the hunting while the female remains closely involved in feeding and protecting the young. As the chick grows, both parents increasingly contribute food. Around 90–100 days after hatching, the young Martial Eagle is ready for its first flight. But leaving the nest doesn't mean it is ready to survive alone. The young bird continues learning from its parents and can remain within their territory for 8–12 months. Other sources report that full independence may take 2–3 years. Then comes the spectacular hunting strategy. The Martial Eagle can detect potential prey from as far as 6 km away. It often soars high above the savannah before launching a powerful, angled dive toward its target. It can also hunt from a high perch or stake out waterholes and game trails. Its prey can include birds, reptiles and mammals, with the eagle capable of taking surprisingly large animals. Small prey may be killed almost instantly on impact, while larger prey can be subdued with its powerful talons.
