Learn how early years practitioners can recognise possible developmental concerns without rushing to diagnose or label a child. This lesson explains why repeated patterns over time are more meaningful than isolated incidents, and why observations must be considered alongside a child’s age, stage, culture, home circumstances and recent life events. It explores possible indicators across four areas: speech, language and communication; social interaction; behaviour; and physical development, including gross and fine motor skills. You will also consider factors such as hearing, vision and multilingual development before drawing conclusions. The lesson then sets out a practical response: observe regularly, document accurately, review observations for patterns, and discuss concerns sensitively with parents or carers. Where appropriate, collaboration may extend to other professionals and referral for specialist support. The focus throughout is professional curiosity, thoughtful interpretation and partnership working to understand a child’s needs.
