Thailand's flood emergency stretched into its fourth week on Wednesday, October 7. The nationwide toll since mid-September has reached 60, flooding persists in 28 provinces including Bangkok, and 1.15 million households remain affected — while in the eastern Bang Pakong basin the water is still rising, and in the Chao Phraya basin it is only just beginning to fall.
In this update:
• Prachin Buri, the hardest-hit province: 19 lives lost, seven districts affected, more than 188,000 people impacted — and its main hospital evacuated to a military field hospital
• Chachoengsao and Prachin Buri still rising across 18 districts as high tides hold the Bang Pakong back
• More than 60,000 households inundated in Prachin Buri as industry counts the cost — an estimated 6 billion baht — with 11 rural roads impassable
• The Chao Phraya basin slowly receding: Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan still deep even as the flow at Nakhon Sawan falls
• Bangkok mopping up after nearly 300mm of rain in three days in late September, with flood disaster areas declared in all 50 districts — days before more than 15,000 delegates arrive for the IMF and World Bank meetings
• Heavy to very heavy rain forecast nationwide from October 9 to 13, Bangkok in its path from October 10
