October 2, 1919. President Woodrow Wilson collapsed in the White House with a massive stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body. The country was told he had "nervous exhaustion." For the next seventeen months, his wife Edith decided which papers reached him, which officials could see him, and what the public would hear. The Vice President was never told how sick he was, the cabinet met without him, and the Treaty of Versailles died in the Senate while the President lay behind a closed door.
