Completing an action does not necessarily mean that the problem has been solved. How do you verify that the action actually worked?
Explore how PDCA — Plan, Do, Check, Act — supports action management in Performance Storyboard®, from defining an action to checking its effectiveness and sustaining the improvement.
A 5S audit provides a practical example: you identify a deviation, assign an action, set a deadline and implement the solution. But before closing the issue, one important question remains: has the cause been addressed, or will the same problem return?
The PDCA cycle provides a structured approach:
P — PLAN
Define what needs to be done, who is responsible, the deadline and the expected result. Address the cause of the issue, not just its visible consequence.
D — DO
Implement the agreed action and record what was done.
C — CHECK
Verify the outcome. Did the action achieve the expected result? Has the deviation been eliminated? Does the problem still occur?
A — ACT
If the solution proved effective, standardize it or incorporate it into everyday work. If it did not, revise the approach and start another improvement cycle.
This logic extends beyond 5S audits. It helps teams manage actions arising from daily operations, problem solving and continuous improvement activities.
The Check and Act phases are especially valuable for recurring deviations, significant audit findings and actions whose effectiveness needs to be verified.
Performance Storyboard® supports this structured approach, helping teams follow actions through to verified results.
“Completed” tells us that the action was carried out.
“Effective” tells us that it worked.
