The Mad Scientist Who Changed Drag Racing Forever | "Sneaky Pete" Robinson In 1961, a Georgia engineer showed up to the NHRA Nationals with a single small-block Chevy and beat twin-engine dragsters running twice his displacement. Officials refused to announce his times because they didn't believe them. Pete Robinson wasn't the most powerful. He was the smartest. And his ideas were so far ahead of his time that Formula 1 wouldn't catch up for another decade. Three of his inventions are mandatory safety equipment in drag racing today. One of his inventions got banned on the spot. And the experiment that killed him at 37 years old is still being studied. This is the full story. If you were at Pomona in '71, if you saw him race, if you've got stories or corrections — drop them in the comments. I want to hear from you.
